The Virtual Cheltenham website is an interactive 3D experience created by students in the Multimedia degree program at Cheltenham & Gloucester College of Higher Education

Cheltenham is a city in England located near Gloucester, in the Cotswold country side.

This site offers useful information about accommodations, nightlife, sports and activities, entertainment, shopping, resources, and transportation, all presented by an impressive interface. An interactive map locates points of interest and each section is linked to a virtual 3D world.

These interactive virtual representations allow you to walk up and down city streets, sample shops, or discover the interior of a local pub.

How was the idea for Virtual Cheltenham website initiated?

The Virtual Cheltenham website was created as our final year project for the Multimedia Degree program at Cheltenham & Gloucester College of Higher Education. We wanted to construct a website that would give the user a realistic and interactive way to experience Cheltenham via the internet.

What was the goal of the project as it pertained to your studies?

The aim was to explore new technologies that could be used over the web. Bearing in mind the emerging broadband technology, we wanted to construct a dynamic new way to experience Cheltenham on the web. Within the site we have tried explore interactive technologies that enhance the virtual experience. For example, using Virtools technology, we recreated several sections of Cheltenham as virtual 3D worlds.

Who is the intended audience?

Initially, we wanted to create a site that would function as a resource for present and prospective Cheltenham students. However, as this project developed we realized that we could open it to a larger clientele, the site is not only for students, but also useful to Cheltenham residence and visitors.

How long was the site in production?

We started the project back in October 2000, the first couple of months were spent putting our ideas onto paper and researching possible software. Actual production of the site began in December 2000.

What led to the decision to use Virtools for the 3D navigation?

The decision to represent Cheltenham in 3D environments was made in the initial stages of the project. We began by researching 3D tools available for releasing work on the internet.

The first 3D program we started researching into was Cult3D, although we were getting small file sizes, we could not achieving object collisions, which we required. One member of the team who had seen a Virtools demonstration at a computer show suggested that we try Virtools technology. We then managed to download a trial version off the internet, and performed a series of tests to compare it with the other 3D software.

The performance of the software and the advanced capabilities which it allowed, persuaded us to use Virtools technology. Once we convinced the college of our project and the importance of Virtools, they brought us an educational version.

Specifically, what Virtools software was used to construct the interactive 3D components of the site?

The Virtools GUI.

Was this an industry sponsorship project, and if so, how will the project be used?

Sadly, this was not an industry sponsored project.

Although we feel that it has great potential for the commercial sector, due to time constraints, the Virtual Cheltenham website was not intended to be a fully finished commercial product.
